Taste of The Wild For Huskies? (Top Reviews)

Picking out a top-notch kibble for your husky can be quite a task. Taste of The Wild is a brand that’s been gaining some attention in the Siberian Husky circle, so let’s dive deeper into what they offer.

Taste of the Wild has 9 product lines but I won’t be reviewing all of them, I will be covering three of their most popular dry kibble options that husky owners often use.

Is Dry Kibble Right For Your Husky?

If you’ve found yourself here because you’re currently having a hard time finding a brand that works for you, have you considered that dry kibble isn’t actually the way to go?

All huskies manage their food in different ways and one husky may digest dry kibble well, and another may not. Despite kibble being the easiest and most affordable diet, if you’re now five brands deep trying to find one that works, it could be that your husky just needs something else.

I’m going to review Taste of the Wild because they’re one of the most popular brands for husky owners and many huskies do very well on their food. If after you’ve tried them, and many other brands and you still aren’t having any luck, it may be time to look into human-grade dog food or the BARF diet.

For now, let’s see if Taste of the Wild is good for huskies. This review isn’t outright promoting that they are the best, and I’m quite aware of the varying opinions that many may have. It’s intended to be as fair as possible for you to make your own informed decision 🙂

Taste of the Wild: Good For Huskies?

Taste of the Wild has nine product lines, but I will only be taking a closer look at three of the most popular ones for husky owners.

With each one, I will run through the key ingredients, benefits, and whether or not it has received any recall notices, and I’ll leave a link for you to check out reviews on the site.

1. Taste of the Wild: High Prairie Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

See Customer Reviews

Overview

High Prairie is their most popular product in general, let alone for huskies. This particular option is one of their higher protein foods.

About 32% is made up of protein, sourced from Venison, and Bison, both of which are not common allergens 👍.

This particular option is classed as balanced for all adult dogs. But due to it’s higher protein levels than usual, it would best suit huskies that are properly active. If you are giving your husky two or more hours of intensive exercise per day, this protein level should be fine.

Key Information for Taste of the Wild: High Prairie ✔️

The nutritional break down of this High Prairie is as follows 32% crude protein, 20% fat, and 36% carbohydrates (estimated).

  • Higher than average crude protein level of 32%. Appropriate for well-exercised huskies.
  • Buffalo (bison) is the no.1 ingredient. Venison and Bison, both of which are not common allergens which is a good sign for the husky’s sensitive stomach.
  • First five ingredients: Buffalo, lamb meal, chicken meal, sweet potatoes, peas
  • It contains their own strain of K9 probiotics to help aid digestion. They promote that each pound of their product contains 80million live cultures to keep the digestive system and immune system healthy.
  • This option contains a plethora of vegetables, legumes and fruits which provides a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Includes a unique root called Dried Chicory. This is a source of prebiotic fiber, which helps support the proper functioning of the digestive system.
  • It contains Zinc proteinate, which is one of the premium forms of Zinc. This is great to see, considering many huskies suffer from zinc deficiency.

The Negatives: ❌

So, when taking a closer look at the ingredients, you’ll see chicken meal. Chicken meal isn’t a big issue and it’s not the same as chicken by-product. Chicken meal is made up of 5 times more real chicken compared to by-product (which is the nasty stuff.

The negative is the fact that chicken in a common allergen and your husky may not react well to chicken. So even though the main protein source is real Buffalo, there’s still chicken in it.

All in all, this may not be too much of an issue for you unless you already know that your husky doesn’t do well with chicken

Recalls:

According to the Dog Food Advisor, this product has not received any food recalls ✔️

Dog Food Advisor also promotes this food to be the No.1 dog food for huskies

Overall Rating For Huskies – 4.8/5 – See Kibble Now

Overall I think this is a great option for most huskies, particularly huskies that are very active. If your husky doesn’t receive more than the average amount of exercise, you may be better off with kibble that contains less protein. Sierra Mountain contains less protein than High Prairie of Wetlands.

2. Taste of the Wild: Wetlands Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

See Customer Reviews

Overview

Wetlands is not their second most popular but it is a favorite amongst husky owners. It seems the protein source of duck, quail, and turkey digests particularly well, and through all the husky owners I’ve spoken to using this one, I can’t recall any of them having a bad experience. I can’t say this will be the case for everyone, but so far, it has excellent first-hand reviews.

Just like the High Prairie, this option contains a higher than normal protein level so again, this is ideal if you husky received 2 or more hours of intensive experience per day.

The last option (Sierra Mountain) I will be reviewing below will contain less protein.

Key Information for Taste of the Wild: Wetlands ✔️

The nutritional break down of Wetlands is as follows 32% crude protein, 20% fat, and 36% carbohydrates (estimated).

  • Higher than average crude protein level of 32%. Appropriate for well-exercised huskies.
  • Duck is the no.1 ingredient. Duck, Quail, and Turkey are main contributing flavors to the Wetlands option
  • First five ingredients: Duck, duck meal, chicken meal, sweet potatoes, and, peas.
  • Contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 to help maintain healthy skin and coat
  • It contains their own strain of K9 probiotics to help aid digestion. They promote that each pound of their product contains 80million live cultures to keep the digestive system and immune system healthy.
  • This option contains a plethora of vegetables, legumes and fruits which provides a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Includes a unique root called Dried Chicory. This is a source of prebiotic fiber, which helps support the proper functioning of the digestive system.
  • It contains Zinc proteinate which is one of the premium forms of Zinc. This is great to see considering many huskies suffer from zinc deficiency.

The Negatives: ❌

Like with High Prairie you find chicken meal. Remember, it’s not the meal that’s the problem it’s the fact that chicken is a common allergen and some huskies may not react well to chicken. Your husky may be able to digest chicken fine, but it is important to point out.

Overall Rating For Huskies – 4.8/5 – See Kibble Now

Overall I think this is a great option to try. I have heard that Wetlands digests rather well, so if your husky is extra sensitive with his digestion, I would personally try this option over High Prairie or Sierra Mountain

3. Taste of the Wild: Sierra Mountain Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

See Customer Reviews

Overview

Sierra Mountain lion again rivals the popularity of High Prairie. This time we finally come across an option with a lower protein level. Which will make it more appropriate to the majority of huskies.

The Sierra Mountain option uses lamb as the main protein source. Not only is the overall protein content a little lower at 25% but the fewer sources of protein used, typically makes digestion easier.

It does contain egg products and lentils which both have protein, but this is insignificant compared to the bulk of it, coming just from lamb.

Egg product is actually considered to be one of the highest quality forms of protein that any pet manufacturer could use. Despite lamb being the main protein source, it’s great to know that such high-quality ingredients such as egg-product are still being used. Egg product is also highly digestible, perfect for huskies.

Key Information for Taste of the Wild: Sierra Mountain ✔️

The nutritional break down of Sierra Mountain is as follows 25% crude protein, 15% fat, and 35% carbohydrates (estimated).

  • A lower crude protein level of 25%. More appropriate for the majority of Siberian huskies.
  • Lamb is the main protein source in Sierra Mountain. I like this as it makes it easier for your husky’s digestive system. Fewer protein sources are commonly seen in limited ingredient foods made especially for sensitive stomachs. This will be valuable for most huskies.
  • First five ingredients: Lamb, lamb meal, sweet potatoes, egg product, lentils
  • Contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 to help maintain healthy skin and coat
  • It contains their own strain of K9 probiotics to help aid digestion. They promote that each pound of their product contains 80million live cultures to keep the digestive system and immune system healthy.
  • This option contains a plethora of vegetables, legumes, and fruits which provides a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Only apart from the fact that Omega-3 is in a lower dose, there aren’t any negatives that jump out about Sierra Mountain.

There is no chicken meal in this option.

Recalls:

According to the Dog Food Advisor, this product has not received any food recalls ✔️

Overall Rating For Huskies – 4.6/5 – See Kibble Now

Overall I think Sierra Mountain will be more appropriate to the majority of huskies out there. 25% protein is more acceptable than 32% especially if your husky doesn’t run marathons every day!

Summary

If you’ve been considering Taste of the Wild then I hope this has helped you with your decision.

In general, Taste of the Wild receives great reviews and from the husky owners who I have spoken to that actually use TOTW, I’ve only heard good things. This doesn’t mean it will work for your husky, but out of the vast selection of brands, it’s clear to me that this is one of the best and most appropriate for huskies.

Is kibble healthier than human-grade dog food or the BARF diet? I personally don’t think so. But with the BARF diet being so expensive, it typically isn’t maintainable in the long run (unless you can afford $300-400 a month on fresh produce for your husky)
