Whenever we find a way to make our huskies healthier, we go for it. But when it comes to supplements, it’s a little more complex.
This article takes a closer look at one of the “healthiest” dog supplements on the market: Fish Oil. I’ll cover how huskies can benefit from it, and whether it’s appropriate for yours, followed by some reliable options.
What Is Fish Oil?
Simply put, fish oil is the fat or oil that is extracted from fish tissue.
There are certain types of fish considered to be “oily fish” such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, trout, and pilchards.
Around 30% of the fish oil is made up of Omega-3 including EPA and DHA. The remaining 70% of fish oil is made up of other healthy fats and even vitamins A and D.
Just like us, our canine friends can’t produce Omega-3 naturally so it’s necessary to get it through diet or with supplementation.
So that’s what fish oil is, now let’s take a look at the various health benefits and how it may help your husky.
Is Fish Oil Good For Huskies?
Fish oil has a wide range of important health benefits, which is exactly why it’s such a hot topic.
Fish Oil, Omega 3, EPA, and DHA have a range of health benefits for huskies including:
- Supports the heart
- Strengthens the immune system
- Helps brain development
- Maintains eye health
- Promotes healthy skin and coat
- Reduce allergies
- Fight canine cancer.
Eye health, skin and coat health and allergies stand out to me here as many Siberian huskies suffer from eye issues, skin and coat issues, and allergies. Fish oil will likely help prevent and sometimes even assist in treating certain issues commonly seen in huskies.
So it is clear that fish oil will certainly be good for your husky. But before you rush to the checkout with a lifetime supply of fish oil, you must understand the quantities.
Nearly all dog food brands nowadays include Omega 3 and Omega 6 and are sure to point out if DHA is included as well. DHA is actually found in mother’s milk, so this is something pet food brands are happy to include, and then boast about!
Adding extra fish oil to your husky’s diet depends on a few things, the next section will explain this fully.
How Much Fish Oil Can Huskies Have?
How much fish oil should your husky receive on a daily basis? I’m glad you asked! It depends on your husky’s weight, and how much fish oil he is already receiving.
An easy calculation to make. The recommended daily fish oil dosage for dogs is 100 mg/kg of body weight. To work out kg from lbs just divide by 2.2.
For example, the average husky weighs around 60lbs. So after making the necessary calculations above, we know that the recommended daily amount of fish oil is 2700mgs per day for that husky.
The issue with dog food package labels. Omega 3 and Omega 6 are recorded as percentages and we don’t know in terms of mg’s how much your husky is actually receiving.
I recommend talking to your veterinarian about the kibble you are using and it’s fish oil content. As dog food contains a somewhat unknown amount of Omega 3 in terms of mg’s your veterinarian will guide you on a starting daily dosage.
You may find that if your husky is happy, doesn’t have any health problems and you’re using a high-quality kibble your veterinarian may not recommend adding more fish oil to his diet.
The Best Fish Oil Supplements For Huskies
If you know that your husky does in fact need extra fish oil in his diet, then the following list will be extremely helpful to you. Here are some of the best fish oil supplements currently on the market.
1. Zesty Paws Salmon Bites Supplement
Zesty Paws have been a customer favorite for a long time. They make supplement treats/bites that seem to go down well for practically every dog that tries them.
This is perfect for any husky that dislikes capsules in their food. Having to hide in the pills sometimes doesn’t work. But with these tasty treats, it’s no longer an issue.
Salmon bites contain a higher amount of Omega 3 compared to 6 which is good to see and it’s loaded with premium DHA fatty acids, Vitamin B-complex, and other essential vitamins and minerals.
In my opinion, the most preferable way to supplement your husky’s diet is with Zesty Paws bites.
2. Nutri-Vet Fish Oil Dog Softgels
If swallowing capsules is no big deal for your husky then Nutri Vet is your best bet. Formulated by veterinarians, Nutri Vet is carefully made to ensure your husky gets top quality essential fatty acids in the right amounts.
Up to 97% of the customers who tried Nutri Vet either purchased again or would recommend to another dog owner.
Not to mention how affordable they are. I’ve yet to see a cheaper fish oil capsule supplement without skimping on quality.
3. Fera Pet Organics Fish Oil + Vitamin E
And finally, there’s a liquid option as well. With liquid supplements, you simply pump it onto your dog’s food. Each pump is considered a dose and has the corresponding nutrients on the package label.
What’s great about this option is that it contains all of the rich nutrients and fatty acids in their natural state and is made with freshly caught sardines, anchovies, and herring from Icelandic waters.
As this product is made naturally, the EPA and DHA content is not only very high but also in it’s pure form.
Although this option doesn’t have as many reviews, it’s definitely outstanding with how many happy customers it has. 98% of the people who tried Fera Fish Oil either purchased again or will recommend to other dog owners.
Can Your Husky Have Too Much Fish Oil?
Simply put, yes. It is possible to give too much fish oil to your husky.
And it’s important to stick to the recommended dosage of 100mg per Kg of body weight.
If your husky has too much fish oil in their diet it can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, blood clotting abnormalities, delayed wound healing, weight gain, vitamin E deficiency, and a weakened immune system.
So, with that being said, it’s best to first speak to your veterinarian about how much fish oil you can safely give to your husky. It may become apparent that a fish oil supplement is not necessary.
But in the meantime, you can check out the options above on Chewy, and save a considerable amount of money when following the simple steps to get 30% off your order. I have a short post explaining how.
So there you have it! You now know that fish IS good for huskies, but it’s important to only give him the recommended amount.
If you’re currently using fish oil for specific reasons, comment below! You may just help out some other husky owners!
