Best Wet Dog Food For Huskies: The Top 3 Picks

Best Wet Dog Food For Huskies: The Top 3 Picks

My Happy Husky has narrowed down the best wet dog food for huskies to only 3 top options. It’s hard enough to choose from ten brands, let alone hundreds. So through careful consideration, here are 3 of the most suitable best wet dog foods on the market now, for your husky.

The following 3 wet foods have been carefully checked, and you’ll find below why they will best suit a husky. I will also cover the pros, cons, and everything else you want to know.

Should Your Husky Eat Wet Dog Food? (A Full Explanation)

The first type of dog food that springs to anyone’s mind is dry kibble. That’s the most common and widely used type of dog food today.

Your husky is probably on dry kibble already, so when and why would it be necessary to use wet dog food?

As with all diet-related topics, you find some very strong opinions about what’s right and wrong. But the truth is that all diets have their place, and it will ultimately depend on your own husky.

So let’s cover some important points about wet food.

What’s Healthier? Wet or Dry Dog Food?

Veterinarians actually recommend a diet of 80% kibble with 20% wet food. And that’s on a daily basis. The reason being is because wet food is not only significantly tastier, but it’s more nutritious too. Take a look at the chart below comparing kibble to dry food.

Although I don’t recommend a straight 100% wet food diet (which I’ll explain later on) you can certainly see from the table below how wet food has its place.

Wet FoodDry Food
Higher meat protein✔️
Meat closer to it’s original state✔️
Higher natural fats✔️
Fewer carbohydrates✔️
Fewer preservatives✔️
Fewer chemicals✔️
More paletable✔️
More appetizing✔️
Longer shelf life✔️
Cost✔️
Convenience✔️
No refrigeration✔️
Slower eating✔️
This is a reconstruction table from the Dog Food Advisor

Technically speaking, wet food is healthier food in most cases. The meat found in wet food is closer to its original state, the protein is preserved and it’s significantly tastier.

Also due to the airtight containment, much fewer preservatives, additives, and chemicals are put into the food to keep it fresh, unlike kibble. As you can see, there already many important benefits to canned wet dog food.

So Should Your Husky Eat Wet or Dry Food?

I believe a mix of both dry kibble and wet food is the most appropriate diet. This way, you’re meeting the pros and cons in the middle, you’re getting some benefits from each of the different types of food. (raw food diet will be covered in a separate article)

If your husky is healthy and doesn’t have any specific eating habits you need to overcome, then sticking to the veterinarian recommended ratio of 80% dry kibble and 20% wet dog food is the best option. I don’t always agree with everything that veterinarians say, but for this, I do.

How topping off kibble with a small amount of wet food helps:

  • It makes his food significantly more appealing and tasty
  • It adds a boost of protein
  • Creates a more varied source of nutrition
  • Reduces overall carbohydrate intake
  • Reduces overall chemical intake
  • Increases water intake
  • Keeps your husky happy and excited to eat his meals!

What About an All-Wet Food Diet?

Although wet food has its many benefits, in general, I believe it’s better to give a mix of dry kibble with wet food, over an all wet food diet.

All wet food diets can work in limited situations:

  • Your husky cannot stomach dry kibble or has been refusing kibble altogether. Even after all the tips and tricks in the book have been tried.
  • You’ve been recommended to follow this by your veterinarian due to various health reasons

Other than those two times, following an all-wet food diet isn’t necessary or best practice.

I said earlier about how nutritious wet dog food is, well, there is such a thing as too nutritious. If your husky eats too much protein, in the long run, it could negatively affect his kidneys and liver.

And although some experts have deemed that “wet food increases plaque build-up” as a myth, It still makes sense that you will need to monitor your husky’s dental hygiene more frequently. The bonus of dry kibble is that the harder texture massages gums, promotes blood flow, and yes, slightly cleans teeth. Wet food doesn’t provide as much resistance meaning it could be seen as too easy to eat. Whether or not it leads to more plaque build-up, is an on-going debate.

In my opinion, and professional veterinarians’ opinions, balance and variety are key. Providing a mixture is going to be more appropriate and healthier in the long run for your husky.

The Best Wet Dog Food For Huskies

I will run through the 3 top wet dog foods for your husky and explain each one. I will also provide a link to purchase the foods. The links currently go to Chewy.com. At the moment, Chewy seems to promote the best deals when it comes to dog food, and you can take advantage of it too. The coupon below links to another page I have explaining how to get 30% off your next order. It’s simple, and you’ll save money.

1. Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe Chicken Dinner with Garden Vegetables & Brown Rice

Check Out Blue Buffalo

Although there are more top competitors when it comes to dry kibble, Blue Buffalo is one of the best for the wet food. Their homestyle chicken dinner with garden vegetables and brown rice is a well-established product that has been around for many years and received thousands of positive reviews.

This particular wet food is not grain-free, which raises an interesting topic. Not too long ago, the FDA launched an investigation into whether grain-free diets are actually worse for your dog in the long run compared to the foods with grain. There was a disturbing link between grain-free and a huge volume of dogs that developed specific health issues, with heart disease being one of them. BUT, the FDA didn’t manage to conclude that study, so it is currently still unknown whether or not grain-free was the contributor. So having said all of that, if you’re someone who does want to limit the grain-free foods your husky eats, then this is a good option for you. (even if the kibble you mix with it, is grain-free)

Let’s take a look at the key positives and negatives of this particular product.

Positives ✔️Negatives ❌
✔️ First four ingredients are all natural whole ingredients. Including Chicken, Chicken broth, Chicken Liver and Carrots Contains carrageenan which is a considered a controversial ingredient. Used as a thickening agent, but may be linked to health issues
✔️ Contains Zinc Amino Acid Chelate. A premium form of Zinc
✔️ Made without wheat
✔️ Doesn’t contain by-product meals, corn, wheat, soy, artifical flavors or preservatives
✔️ A rich protein and fat source
✔️ Multiple vitamins and minerals

This option has been tried and tested by so many dog owners and 93% of those who tried it would recommend it to another dog owner. With so many positive reviews and a long history of working for others, this will be one of the best-wet food options for your husky. You can check it out here on Chewy.com. P.S don’t forget you are able to get 30% off, find out how here

2. Taste of the Wild High Prairie Grain-Free

Check Out Taste of the Wild

Taste of the Wild High Prairie (equivalent kibble version) has been rated the No.1 recommended choice of dog food for huskies by the Dog Food Advisor. And if that wasn’t enough, their wet canned option has been rated the overall No.1 recommended wet dog food by the Dog Food Advisor as well. 😮 That’s a pretty good start!

This option is of course, grain-free. So it’s up to you if you want to keep with the grain-free or not. If you don’t mind then this will be your best option to go for. You may already be using the equivalent dry kibble for your husky at the moment. In which case, it would be a great match.

The protein content of this is significantly high however, at 44% you won’t want to be giving your husky too much of this. This should definitely only be used as a topper for your husky’s dry kibble, and you may even refrain from giving it every day.

Let’s take a look at the key positives and negatives of this particular product.

Positives ✔️Negatives ❌
✔️ First five ingredients are all natural whole ingredients. Including Beef, Lamb broth, vegetable broth, Lamb liver, and dried egg product More expensive than other options
✔️ Contain a healthy blend of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Protein may be too high for some
✔️ Contains Zinc Amino Acid Chelate. A premium form of Zinc
✔️ Doesn’t contain by-product meals, corn, wheat, soy, artifical flavors or preservatives
✔️ A rich protein and fat source
✔️ Multiple vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
✔️ Extra gravy which helps make kibble more mosit and tasty (when used as a topper)

In my opinion, one of the best wet canned foods on the market. The only reason I place this as second and not first is because of the high protein content and that it’s grain-free. But the grain-free topic, is open for discussion, as it hasn’t yet been proven to be worse. The high protein isn’t an issue, but you will need to pay more attention to how much you give. Apart from that, a perfect option to try.

This product has received hundreds of positive reviews and 93% of the people who tried it, will use it again or recommend it to others. You can check it out here on Chewy.com. P.S don’t forget you are able to get 30% off, find out how here

3. Merrick Grain-Free Cowboy Cookout Canned Dog Food

Check Out Merrick

Our third place goes to Merrick “cowboy cookout”. Another great option to consider. This product has received 5 stars on the Dog Food Advisor and it’s actually 3rd on their list of best wet dog as well!

This is a grain-free product that’s appropriate for all life stages, so you can be sure it’s good for your puppy, adult, or senior husky. I usually like to stick to foods that are tailored specifically to age, but if you aren’t too worried, this will be a great option for you.

Just like always, the most important aspect of the food is what’s been put into it, and this has a clean rap sheet. The first five ingredients are clean, whole foods just as we like to see. I will list them in the table below.

Let’s take a look at the key positives and negatives of this particular product.

Positives ✔️Negatives ❌
✔️ First five ingredients are all natural whole ingredients. Including Deboned beef, Beef broth, Chicken broth, Beef liver and, Peas Higher than usual protein
✔️ All life stages formula, appropriate for puppies, adults and seniors
✔️ Contains Zinc Amino Acid Chelate. A premium form of Zinc
✔️ Doesn’t contain by-product meals, corn, wheat, soy, artifical flavors or preservatives
✔️ Contains salmon oil which includes important DHA, EPA and Omega-3 fatty acids.
✔️ Multiple vitamins, minerals and antioxidants

Another fantastic option for you to consider. Again, this wet food like Taste of the Wild is quite high in protein. So this does need to be taken into consideration when using it as a topper. Too much protein is never good and can cause an array of health issues if constantly consuming too much. Fortunately, though, huskies are a breed that should be receiving highly intensive exercise, and a lot of it. So the protein will be sufficiently used within your husky’s body.

With 93% percent of customers recommending this to other dog owners and hundreds of positive reviews, this is another option to try. You can check it out here on Chewy.com.

P.S don’t forget you are able to get 30% off, find out how here.
